Some users may encounter errors when attempting to access certain websites using Google Chrome. The browser may block access and display messages such as:

  • “Your connection is not private”

  • “ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR”

  • “HSTS error”

These errors occur because Chrome enforces HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS), a security mechanism designed to protect users from insecure connections.

Cause

HSTS is a security feature that forces browsers to connect to websites using HTTPS only. If a website fails to meet HTTPS security requirements, Chrome will block access to protect the user.

This may happen when:

  • The website’s SSL certificate has expired

  • The SSL certificate is misconfigured

  • There is a cached HSTS policy or SSL conflict in Chrome

Resolution / Workarounds

Option 1: Clear HSTS Settings in Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome and enter:
    chrome://net-internals/#hsts in the address bar.

  2. Scroll to Delete domain security policies.

  3. Enter the affected domain name.

  4. Click Delete.

  5. Restart Chrome and try accessing the website again.

Option 2: Clear Browser Cache and SSL State

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear browsing data.

  3. Select Cached images and files and Cookies.

  4. Click Clear data.

  5. Additionally, open:
    Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options > Content tab > Clear SSL State.

Additional Notes

  • HSTS errors are enforced at the browser level and cannot be safely bypassed.

  • Disabling or bypassing HSTS is not recommended, as it exposes users to potential security risks.

  • For internal or trusted environments, HSTS policies can be managed using Chrome enterprise policies, but only with approval from your IT or security team.
